The Weekly Challenge, 25th October 2021 – A Greener Future

This week marks the start of the UN Climate Change Conference – COP26, which takes place in Glasgow, Scotland from 31st October – 12th November. This week’s challenge is from Ruth & Greg, who are based in Glasgow and are volunteering at the conference.

What is COP 26?

It is the annual United Nations climate change summit. This year is the 26th year it has taken place. COP stands for ‘Conference of Parties’, where global leaders, experts and organisations come together to address the climate emergency and reach an agreement on how countries plan to tackle it.

‘COP 21 took place in Paris. During this, every country agreed to work together to limit global warming to below 2 degrees and aim for 1.5 degrees, to adapt to the impacts of a changing climate and to make money available to deliver on these aims.

The Paris Agreement was born. The commitment to aim for 1.5 degrees is important because every fraction of a degree of warming will result in the loss of many more lives lost and livelihoods damaged. They agreed that every five years they would come back with an updated plan that would reflect their highest possible ambition at that time.’ – [ukcop26.org]

This is why COP26 is so important, as it’s the first time the agreement will be revisited and countries will need to show how they have met their targets.

Do

Write a letter to your future self, it could be 5 years or 20, as far ahead as you like. Describe to them what your hopes are for a greener future. What do you hope will have changed or developed? You could imagine your future self lives in a world that is completely renewable, what questions would you have for them? What do you imagine had to change in our world today to reach this renewable future?

Your letter could be written, Illustrated or a recording, create it in any way you like!

If you have more time….

Why not send your letter and your thoughts on COP 26 to your local MP and ask them what they are doing to support climate action.

Think

Think about what actions you can take now to contribute to a greener future.

What conversations could you be having in your community and amongst friends and family? Is there a local climate action group you could join? Or you could consider ethical banking.
