Day 28. A postcard from Belper, Derbyshire.
Belper is a small, market town of around 20000 people, 8 miles north of Derby. Belper has a football team called ‘the Nailers, a name derived from Belper’s past industry of nail manufacture when the area was part of the Royal Forest in Derbyshire. Belper’s rapid growth was due to the building of water powered cotton mills by Jedediah Strutt The Mills stand in The Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. Next to this is Belper River Gardens opened over 100 years ago and where Belper holds it’s annual Well Dressings in mid July..Belper in Bloom was selected to represent the East Midlands in the Large Town Category in the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Britain in Bloom UK Finals 2017 and was awarded a gold medal! Plans for many more houses have been accepted, which will mean a growing population. But I feel sure Belper will remain the friendly welcoming place we know and love.
