This is very much my chair. It’s the only flat-pack thing I’ve ever made that was completely straightforward and didn’t make me want to smash it to pieces mid-creation! It’s also really comfy and has a lovely, stable rocking motion. It was my mother-in-law’s favourite place to sit in our house and I always think of her when I sit in it; she died suddenly last July – she was elderly, but it was still a shock for us all. Today I thought about her and all the other family members who have sat in this chair and other chairs in the room. Friends came to mind too as thought moved on to thought – so many objects in the room have associations with those I care about. It felt nice to look around quietly – something I rarely do – and feel surrounded somehow by people.
